The Ombalantu Baobab towers 28 metres above the surrounding landscape, it has a diameter of 26.5 metres and is estimated to be 800 years old. In earlier times its lofty branches served as lookout posts and women and children took refuge in its hollowed-out stem. Later on a small entrance was cut into its trunk and it served as a post office around 1940. During the liberation struggle it was used by the SA Defence Force and at some stage it served as a small chapel as the remainders of a cross, altar and benches were found. The baobab is now the centrepiece of the Ombalantu Baobab Heritage Site run by local community members.Pottery, baskets and other handicrafts sourced from local crafters are on sale and there is also a kiosk where you can buy refreshments. The tree was declared a heritage site in September 2011.
